On the beautiful southern coast of Maine is where you will find the city of South Portland Maine. South Portland Maine is a community that is often thought of as two distinct cities. The western half of South Portland Maine is associated with technology and commercial industry. The eastern part of South Portland Maine is home to an area, which includes parks and beaches, a municipal boat ramp, a lovely community college campus, a maritime museum and one of Maine's largest marinas. The development of South Portland Maine consists of a rich history that took a residential community and built a shipyard, which constructed cargo ships for England during World War II. It also became the shipyard responsible for building 10% of all Liberty Ships, which in turn created jobs for 30,000 people. South Portland Maine hired many women during this historical period to do the industrial work of the men who left for war. These days South Portland Maine is the home to great shopping at the Maine Mall, top manufacturers of computer components, as well as many other important businesses. South Portland Maine has a fantastic department of Parks and Recreations which plays an enormous role in the life of South Portland Maine residents and visitors. Some of the South Portland Maine recreational facilities consist of 525 acres of parkland, a nine hole golf course, municipal beaches and 1.8 miles of hiking trails. South Portland Maine is a city that is clearly devoted to those who live and visit. Children through senior citizens are provided with wonderful programs and transportation is plenty.
