Orono, Maine is a portion of the surrounding Bangor metro area and lies along the Penobscot River. Located in East Central part of the State, Orono?s population is under 10,000. The University of Maine is located in Orono; it offers a well-founded traditional education with a wide variety of bachelor?s to doctoral degree programs.
The Jordan Planetarium and Observatory is owned and operated by the University, and is the only observatory open to the public in Maine. Tours and star shows are available for people of all ages and the twenty-foot dome theater provides an interactive experience with the cosmos.
Other attractions in Orono, Maine include the Hudson Museum, several playgrounds and parks and golfing at the Penobscot-Valley Country Club. Visitors can enjoy plants and flowers from Maine and all over the world on ten acres at the Fay Hyland Botanical Plantation, an arboretum and botanical garden. It is located alongside the Stillwater River in Orono, on the campus of the University.
Kayaking and whitewater rafting along the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers is an excellent way to enjoy the picturesque scenery of the region surrounding Orono, Maine.
